PEPE DELUXÉ – Before You Leave…Again!

Just days before the release of Super Sound 25, Pepe Deluxé return with the song that made them international — the UK Top 20–hitting, still-impossible-to-categorise slice of sonic mischief: Before You Leave.

Originally created for Levi’s Twisted Jeans campaign, the track began as Woman in Blue, a sample-packed explosion so dense that Sony and EMI valued its clearance at half a million pounds — over a million dollars today. Rather than pay, Pepe rewrote it completely — a creative heist that changed everything for the band.

The reimagined Before You Leave went on to become Pepe’s most-played song ever, earning a Cannes Gold Lion, soundtracking global TV ads and shows, and even the French presidential debates. Now, more than two decades later, it returns with two new 2025 remixes and a freshly remastered original — bringing its wild journey full circle.

    The 2025 Remixes

    • DJ Slow 2025 Remix — The original Pepe turntablist, DJ Slow, returns after over two decades with a ‘90s-nostalgic yet super-muscular reboot. Built from the original session and a vintage TV performance recording, with James Spectrum’s added production and mixing — it’s pure 1999 spirit running on 2025 horsepower.

    • Pepe Deluxé’s End in Tears RemixPaul Malmström’s orchestral tour-de-force streamlined by Spectrum: a lush, cinematic reinvention that transforms the track into something entirely new yet unmistakably Pepe 2025.

    • Plus, a remastered re-release of the original Before You Leave, cut directly from vinyl for that warm, unmistakable groove.

    Another Lost Pepe Video Reborn

The original Before You Leave music video is the black sheep among Pepe’s visual adventures, where “OH! My Eyes!” tends to be the norm. Director Miikka Lommi proposed plenty of wild ideas, but Sony — who financed the shoot — insisted it remain “classy and conservative.”

The result? Imagine a high-gloss gallery party where everyone looks fabulous, slightly lost, and politely bored — led by “Woman in Blue” herself, Finnish model and TV personality Saimi Hoyer.

The video’s master tapes vanished years ago, but Pepe recently unearthed Lommi’s personal VHS viewing copy. After a unique process dubbed “ZX Spectrumizing” — a hybrid of analog and digital treatments that even ran the sound through a C-cassette — the band restored what they call “the best colour-bleeding version ever.”

Visually, it’s not lo-fi. It’s burned-fi. And while it remains Pepe’s only “conservative” (read: “boring”) video, it offers a rare glimpse into the earnest, slightly naïve aesthetics of the turn of the millennium.

    Legacy, Reloaded

For Pepe Deluxé, nostalgia isn’t about looking back — it’s about seeing what happens when yesterday’s class meets tomorrow’s technology (and ideas from out there). Before You Leave (2025 Remixes) bridges that gap beautifully — a reminder of how one madly ambitious track turned three Finnish misfits into global sonic alchemists.

PEPE DELUXÉ – Riding Again, Louder Than Ever

Before their long-awaited Super Sound 25 reissue lands, Finland’s most unpredictable export Pepe Deluxé slam the pedal to the floor with a double-barrelled blast of absurd brilliance: the supercharged double A-side The Ride 2 / Rocket Fuel.

If Super Sound 25 is the party, this is the engine roar that announces it.

      The Ride 2

It all began with a lost video.
Back in 1997, a young Finnish trio called Pepe Deluxé shot a music video for their demo track Clint Eastwood Rides Again — a Sabotage-meets-cheap-Finnish-’70s-TV fever dream directed by Miikka Lommi (later of Bomfunk MC’s Freestyler fame).

Budget: five Finnish marks (less than €1). Cast: plenty of friends, including future stars from Husky Rescue and Bomfunk MC’s.

The song evolved into The Ride, featured on Pepe’s debut Super Sound. The video, however, vanished — until now. Recently rediscovered, digitised, and re-released to celebrate the album’s 25th anniversary, it inspired Pepe’s latest evolution: The Ride 2.

Now reborn as a full-blown ’80s stadium-pop-rock anthem, The Ride 2 turns the original’s synth-funk gallop into an over-the-top odyssey of riffs and hooks, soaring double-lead vocals (by Paul Malmström & Charlotta Kerbs) and Mr. Fastfinger’s guitar pyrotechnics.

And because this is Pepe Deluxé 2025, the song naturally comes with a deliriously animated video made entirely by the band — cars instead of cowboys and gangsters, souped-up Volvos out-racing fighter planes and leaping over planets, with physics politely ignored. Their motto: “Death before driving stock”.

      Rocket Fuel

On the flip, Rocket Fuel celebrates Finland’s most sacred national ritual: brewing the world’s largest amount of the most questionable coffee, 24/7. Statistically, it’s the happiest country on Earth. Scientifically, it shouldn’t be — six months of darkness, sideways rain, and caffeine jitters, yet everyone’s grinning (inside). Go figure.

Featuring the “Banshee of BostonChris Cote on vocals and thunderous double-kick drumming by metal god Kai Hahto (Nightwish), this is a fuzzed-out ode to bad office coffee, life on overdrive, and the eternal Finnish need for “just one more cup.”

Together, The Ride 2 and Rocket Fuel roar in glorious 7” colour vinyl and digital form — the high-octane warm-up to Pepe’s forthcoming album Super Sound 25, landing 28 November 2025 on Catskills Records.

Helmed by James Spectrum (Helsinki) and Paul Malmström (Brooklyn), Pepe Deluxé remain pop’s most inventive outsiders — a duo for whom excess isn’t a flaw, it’s a worldview.

Pepe Deluxé, aka Finnish-Swedish funkateers James Spectrum and Paul Malmström, drop another AA-single from their forthcoming kaleidoscopic album Comix Sonix (following 21 June, Catskills Records).

On A-side Freedom Flag Pepe Deluxé sing “They try to put us in a box. And then they try to put that box away. No Way!” Creative freedom stands as the main foundational pillar of Pepe Deluxé, alongside eclecticism, coffee, and sausages – the latter featured flying in Freedom Flag’s video by Pepe Deluxé’s Paul Malmström. The song is a playful yet poignant reflection on the dangers of oversimplification and lazy labelling, and as a humorous unexpected twist, another new Pepe track, Earth Boys are Easy, is currently on a TV near you as part of IKEA’s global campaign named – believe it or not – “Box it!”

Freedom Flag boasts a sample by Pepe of the Pepe song which the Prodigy also sampled (Salami Fever) – you follow? Plus, scratches from guest DJ Slow (a former founding-member of Pepe) and a thunderous double bass break by metal legend Kai Hahto, with a banjo and musical spoons further spicing up this funky stew.

The AA-side, From the Mouth of Elmer McCurdy, highlights Pepe Deluxé’s unmatched credentials as the mad hatter inventors of the music world. This time they team up with nearly-as-eccentric creator Bart Hopkin, who boasts a 100+ collection of unique experimental instruments, many of which are showcased on the new album ‘Comix Sonix’. The single includes Bart’s Dansal 3, Slide Rattletine, Moe Flute, Aquaalt, Open TDF and Smoke Paprika; all as peculiar as their names, providing an eclectic backdrop to the song’s incredible true story of the fate of the infamous Oklahoma outlaw. Following his demise at the hands of the sheriff’s posse following a failed train robbery, McCurdy emerged as a coin-eating, roller-skating, US-crisscrossing mummy – with film cameos. Not forgetting a stint where he was painted fluorescent red and suspended from the gallows in an eerie display, only to be discovered by the crew of Six Million Dollar Man, who first mistook him for a dummy. Elmer’s influence even extended to 80’s cartoons, with the creator of Skeletor citing McCurdy as the character’s progenitor. Whew! The song’s title is a reference to a further curiosity, whereby Elmer’s mouth disappeared shortly before his burial. A story as bizarre as Pepé Deluxé’s musical odysseys…

Double AA-single Freedom Flag and From the Mouth of Elmer McCurdy is out 23 April, with Pepe Deluxé’s new long player Comix Sonix following 21 June via Catskills Records.

  • Pepe Deluxé – Saddle that Wind

    £1.00£1.50

If you’re looking for a sad and depressing song, this one fails miserably! ‘Saddle that Wind’ is an exhilarating anthem celebrating the boundless potential of human ambition and innovation. In the middle of all the current nonsense going on around the world, we tend to forget that life for most of us is WAY better than it was 100 years ago, and better than what even kings and queens were enjoying 200 years ago. “Had some prophet spoken true…”

  • Pepe Deluxé – Earth Boys Are Easy (Instrumental Version)

    £1.00£1.50

The 2nd TEASER from the Upcoming Pepe Deluxé Album!

Embark on a cosmic journey with our twist on the classic ‘Space Girl meets Earth Boy’ concept. This song was inspired by NASA’s Pioneer 10 and 11 space probes launched in the early ’70s, now voyaging far beyond our solar system. These interstellar Pioneers not only carry messages from humanity but also provide directions for those curious about Earth.

In this song, a Space Girl receives the Pioneer’s intriguing invitation and decides to pay us a visit. Things get a tad confusing when she notices that the Pioneer’s message showcases nude humans, but only the male has certain anatomical details. Blame it on the (sex-fearing) Americans, who sent these into space – a true story! Our Space Girl, hailing from a planet where only women possess such features, finds the images captivating. How is this possible? Well, the universe is full of mysteries!

This is the basic plot. A tale you won’t, unfortunately, fully unravel until Comix Sonix drops. So sorry.
Meanwhile, enjoy the mesmerizing INSTRUMENTAL Version:

  • Pepe Deluxé – Everybody Is / Sweet Baby Sun

    £2.00£2.50

Enigmatic duo Pepe Deluxé, comprising New York-based Paul Malmström and Helsinki-dwelling James Spectrum, return with another kaleidoscopic sonic marvel, the shape-shifting musical odyssey that is Comix Sonix out 21 June on Catskills Records.

With such exciting news comes not one single but two, for Pepe Deluxé have gone old-school with a double-A single, ‘Everyone Is’ and ‘Sweet Baby Sun’.

Pepe Deluxé describe A-side ‘Everybody Is’ as “A song about the universal human dance between ambition and uncertainty.” It draws from two wildly different UK music treasures: Northern Soul and long-term mutual musical appreciators The Prodigy. The song features the soulful vocal of Finnish-Swedish singer Charlotte Kerbs and masterful drumming by Teppo Mäkynen, whose ever-evolving grooves would drive lesser stick wielders to tears. Renowned teacher, composer, author, researcher, and builder of experimental musical tools, Bart Hopkin, contributes a plethora of gems from his ‘Instrumentarium’, a 100+ collection of one-off instruments, here and throughout Comix Sonix. As always with Pepe Deluxé, expect the unexpected.

The AA-side, ‘Sweet Baby Sun,’ is a Boléro-style composition celebrating birth while also mourning the loss of those things dearest and most valuable to us. “Witnessing one’s children growing up and parents growing old is both the greatest privilege and, at times, unbearably heavy and painful,” say Pepe Deluxé. These emotions find expression in the song’s vocals and music. And even the song’s production: hear the lead singer John McGregor’s voice growing both older and clearer – as if he were traveling through time by leafing through a family photo album. This effect was achieved by combining a Beatles-era trick of recording vocals at different speeds with the use of lo-fi to hi-fi microphones. Charlotte Kerbs’ vocals, in turn, veer from swimming in the background to soaring high above the storming orchestra in moments of poignant intensity. The song’s impressive final crescendo snares are courtesy of Teppo Mäkynen, whose drums were recorded in a vast industrial hall. Bart Hopkin’s unique instruments create again an organic soundscape that, when merged with Paul Malmström’s mighty modular synthesizer, paints abstract yet clear sonic images of life’s pulse and movement.

Those are just two tasters for the extraordinary album that is Comix Sonix, its title alone a hint of the visual and action-packed 3-D nature of the music, where the soundscapes transcend boundaries, akin to a vibrant, explosive, and ever-moving sonic comic book. Each hook and every groove is a story, intertwined into a tapestry of feelings, and with references from pop culture, all beneath Pepe Deluxé’s enticing playful smile.

  • Pepe Deluxé “Back from the Futures with Goldfinger and K”

    £1.00£1.50

The First New Song from the Upcoming Pepe Deluxé Album! 🎶

“Back from the Futures with Goldfinger and K” is a delightfully unconventional composition, even by the most Deluxé of standards. It’s a song of songs, drawing inspiration from Megamixes and the film “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” offering glimpses into the new Pepe Album. However, these aren’t glimpses from OUR future; instead, they are windows to other potential futures and dimensions, where the album might have sounded a little or even completely different! Think of it as a magical journey in sampling from future music that hasn’t even been made yet!

Among the sonic treasures, you’ll discover the title tune of an unreleased Hammer film classic and a musical ode to the most dangerous man in the world. Listen for the resonant tones of the Blüthner piano from the airship Hindenburg, another airborne piano once played by Frank Sinatra (Jr.), a trapped horsefly, and a human skull door knocker – operated by yours truly. 💀🎹

Some familiar faces return, including DJ Slow, the original founding member of Pepe Deluxé, and the world’s largest cowbell, this time accompanied by the most well-endowed man in the world (naturally!). Our trio of fantastic drummers is back, Mr. Fastfinger skillfully navigating a biplane and pterodactyls with his six-string, and Tuukka Haapaniemi, THE bass singer, exploring the stratosphere to deep underground. And that’s just the beginning!

So, there’s a plethora of exciting elements, and we sincerely hope you enjoy this musical journey as much as we enjoyed creating it.

A HUGE THANK YOU to everyone involved in making this possible!!! 🙌🎉 #PepeDeluxe #NewMusic #AlbumTeaser #MusicJourney”

Hey there, stranger! It’s been too long! Remember us? Pepe Deluxé, those fine purveyors of furious drums and crazy tunes?

Well, we’re back with our first single from our forthcoming, new album “Phantom Cabinet Vol. 1” – it’s called Big Fat Woodpecker, of course. You probably remember it fondly from a half-forgotten dream, waking from your slumber, desperately trying to grasp onto it as it slips through your fingers, wondering where it had gone?

’Big Fat Woodpecker’ (out 28 July 2021), a rampaging, pre-Beatles rock’n’roll goof featuring raucous rhythm’n’blues belter Barrence Whitfield of The Savages (and the only man who can and has! out-screamed The Sonics). Poppy and bouncy on top, sonically multi-layered beneath it features the 1847 invention of Alexander Graham Bell which contains a real human ear cartilage, four Guinness World Records (including “loudest instrument ever constructed”), 9th-century Parisian philosophical instruments: monastery bells saved from the invading Soviet army; and Tolkien’s drum track recorded in a large number of unusual spaces including a moving elevator.

B-side, the off-the-wall-lounge-psych yarn ‘Halls of Kalevala,’ is the musical representation of the mythical Kalevala House. It was recorded by Monkees producer Chip Douglas and narrated by ‘60s synth pioneer Cyrus Faryar (whose studio, whilst we’re compiling weird and wonderful facts, was built by none other than a young Harrison Ford).

Available to stream and download from all good (and evil) services, but also available as a STRICTLY LIMITED 7 Single – when the vinyl finally arrives probably in mid-late August from the good people at Catskills Records!

  • Pepe Deluxé – General Deluxé

    £2.00£2.50

‘General Deluxé’ is the second deliciously mind-blowing and bountiful single-come-madcap experimentalist brilliance-come-archeological fest taken from Pepe Deluxé’s forthcoming album ‘Phantom Cabinet Volume 1’.

Not ones to be outdone in the weird stakes, the duo (Finland-based James Spectrum and New York-dwelling Paul Malmström) have surpassed even themselves on this one. Whilst the album’s first single ‘Big Fat Woodpecker’ featured the Alexander Graham Bell recorded on his 1874 Human Ear Phonoautograph (Google it – it’s terrifying), ‘General Deluxe’ boasts… (wait for it) …God’s own trumpet!

As James Spectrum expands “We wanted to have the Last Trumpet on the album, the one that signals Armageddon in the Book of Revelations. So, how do we record that? The ANS synthesiser, created in Soviet Russia in 1938, transforms images into sounds, named after the Russian composer and occultist Alexander Scriabin.”

The duo fed William Blake’s famous drawing of the Last Trumpet into it, so let’s credit Blake on the record too, not to mention the real life birth wail of Spectrum’s daughter, and the huge lead vocals of jazz artist Charlotta Kerbs, backed by classical bass singer Tuukka Haapaniemi, blues belter Chris Cote, and actor Sara Welling. Plus a stadium full of football fans (just because).

The ANS synthesizer at Glinka Music Museum, Moscow seen here being played by curator Olesya Rostovskaya

‘General Deluxé’ leads from the front, and through over five decades of music in one song. It explores lost worlds, seeks out exotic sounds and musical treasures, and goes boldly where no ears have gone before.

For the new album Phantom Cabinet Vol. 1 the duo spent a decade trawling every corner of the Earth to seek out the oldest, strangest instruments ever created to play on the new record, coming 22 October. New single ‘General Deluxé’ precedes the album and is released as a digital single 1st October, both via Catskills Records.

Available to stream and download from all good (and evil) services.
